Body Contouring Technology…

Liposuction by OC Plastic Surgeon Burr von Maur, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Body Contouring technologies range from Liposuction (surgery); to laser liposuction (laser that melts fat); to Non-Invasive Techniques. These Non-Invasive technologies range from Photomology ™ (laser energy and massage) to Endermologie ™ (patent rollers that massage); to electro-optical synergy - (a device that tightens skin while contouring the body). In the future you will see intense marketing of the next round of Non-Invasive Body Contouring devices using Ultrasound. Today, there has been increasing media attention focusing on Cryolipolysis™ by Zeltiq. It is a Non-Invasive device that is used off label (which means it is awaiting FDA approval) and differs from the other non-invasive devices because it uses a cold technique to reduce fat volume. It works by pressing the device against the area to be treated and then becoming cold enough to target only the fat cells in that area. The body reacts with an inflammatory response which causes the body to naturally dispose of the damaged fat cells. The jury is still out regarding the efficacy of most of these non-invasive body contouring procedures.

Alternative to Breast Implants
From skin, to creams, to research, stem cells are continuously proving to be ground breaking in our Plastic Surgery community. Doctors at the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery in Melbourn, Australia, have introduced an innovated stem cell therapy, Neopec. It offers a natural alternative for women to regrow their breast after cancer surgery. Neopec uses a woman’s own regenerative capacity to grow new fat tissue in her breasts and involves implanting a breast-shaped biodegradable chamber into the chest before surgeons redirect blood vessels into the chamber with the patient’s own fat cells. In the next four to six months, the fat grows into the shape of the chamber, which dissolves ehen the new breast is formed. Neopec hopes to provide a solution that is more natural than tissue transplants or silicone implants. Human trials are due to begin before the middle of the year and once perfected, it would also be offered to woman who have had, defects of previous reconstructions or congenital deformities.

I have seen ads of face lift procedures that advertise “sedative state” or
“twilight sleep”. How does this differ from full anesthesia?

www.drvonmaur.com
“Sedative local anesthesia (twilight sleep) can be done for face lift procedures as long as the sedative medications are administered by a trained M.D., Anesthesiologist and you are fully monitored with cardiac telemetry, pulse oximetry, blood pressure monitoring, etc. However, most Board Certified Plastic Surgeons prefer to use general anesthesia because they (and the Anesthesiologist) believe that with general anesthesia, the airway can be controlled and less sedative medications are necessary. General anesthesia is definitely safer and more controllable.”
