New Technologies in Plastic Surgery
Alternative to Breast Implants
From skin, to creams, to research, stem cells are continuously proving to be ground breaking in our Plastic Surgery community. Doctors at the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery in Melbourn, Australia, have introduced an innovated stem cell therapy, Neopec. It offers a natural alternative for women to regrow their breast after cancer surgery. Neopec uses a woman’s own regenerative capacity to grow new fat tissue in her breasts and involves implanting a breast-shaped biodegradable chamber into the chest before surgeons redirect blood vessels into the chamber with the patient’s own fat cells. In the next four to six months, the fat grows into the shape of the chamber, which dissolves ehen the new breast is formed. Neopec hopes to provide a solution that is more natural than tissue transplants or silicone implants. Human trials are due to begin before the middle of the year and once perfected, it would also be offered to woman who have had, defects of previous reconstructions or congenital deformities.
